Due to socio-economic and politic changes that have occurred in the last three decades, internacional organizations (UNESCO, OCDE) and national organizations (ANUIES) have strongly suggested a change in the education curriculum to one based on competences. In consequence, the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN) diagnostic its system and issued an academic and educative reform (2003) with the purpose of changing its institutional educational model and redesigning the curriculum of its academic units.

These changes on the educational model and its curriculum design demanded great challenges to teachers' work, such as developing new pedagogic competences. With an exploratory and descriptive research, the Escuela Superior de Cómputo (ESCOM) of the IPN the perception of the teachers about the pedagogic competences was analyzed, and their perception was that they needed to develop competences in order to implement, effectively, the educational model and its curriculum design. The results showed that the metacognitive competence was the one that teachers less known.
