In this paper, we study the relationship between the size of sugarcane cultivation plots in Mexico and their yield. We show, theoretically and empirically, a U-shaped association between these variables. We present suggestive evidence that this relationship is driven by the more intensive use of inputs in smaller and larger plots relative to those of medium size -those of about eight hectares. These results contribute to the debate regarding the relationship between the size of agricultural production units and their productivity; in the case of Mexican farms, this literature is practically nonexistent.
