SEGOVIA GORDILLO, Ana. Missionary grammars of the quechua language as seen through their paratexts. Nueva rev. filol. hisp. [online]. 2020, vol.68, n.2, pp.451-497. Epub 09-Sep-2020. ISSN 2448-6558. https://doi.org/10.24201/nrfh.v68i2.3645.
This article focuses on the authors of colonial grammars of the Quechua language, their motivations, the intended readers, what languages were included and the different methods used to codify the indigenous languages. To this end, we used 16th, 17th and 18th century Quechua grammar books, paying special attention to the study of their paratexts. The main conclusions are: Jesuits are predominantly the authors; their works fulfill pedagogical and preaching objectives; the intended readers are other members of the clergy; the authors were concerned with the dialectal varieties; and collaborating with native speakers is a fundamental way of gathering information.
