In this paper, we provide evidence of certain factors that, in China and India, trigger political participation. Supported by data from the World Values Survey, our analysis focuses on the role of different types of social capital. With this approach, we analyze both contextual and individual factors. Our approach is based on the fact that, even when experts have researched the role of social capital, relatively few of them have differentiated between contextual and individual factors. Traditionally, scholars have analyzed political participation in such a way that voting is the only important factor; also, they have not paid attention to different types of social capital.
