Resumen

ZARATE TOSCANO, Verónica. The fate of the nobility of the New Spain in the 19th Century: decadence or Adaptation. Hist. mex. [online]. 2016, vol.65, n.4, pp.1789-1815. ISSN 2448-6531.

When New Spain was transformed into an independent and Republican country, the ancient nobility, with their prerrogatives and privileges, sought ways to adapt to the new reality. Some preferred to leave Mexico, but others transformed their former loyalty to the Spanish Crown to help take forward the nascent nation. However, whenever they had a chance, they found a way to show off those traits, which placed them at the top of the ancient society and expatiated their distinction in rituals and ceremonies.

Palabras llave : New Spain; nobility; modernity; adaptation; social mobility; 19th Century.
