In the New Spain of the 17th century there was more demand for higher studies. With the rise of cities and villages of Spanish new generations of young people sought the path of letters as a way to ascend also socially. At the same time, families not Spanish but with possibilities to pay studies children were also present at the Royal University of Mexico. This paper examines to what extent university degrees were a factor in upward mobility of students, as well as understand the facilities or the limits that society offered to lower social strata or groups to gain access to higher studies and start a public career.
