Resumen

LAITANO, Guillermina  y  NIETO, Agustín. Punishment as a daily social relationship in contemporary Argentina. The case of Batán women's prison. Estud. sociol [online]. 2017, vol.35, n.104, pp.293-318. ISSN 2448-6442.  https://doi.org/10.24201/es.2017v35n104.1514.

The article examines the social relationships to which the punished women of the Nº 50 prison of the Batán Penitentiary Complex are subject, through an analysis of the daily punishment practices. A copy of the Book of faults of the prison is the documentary source, which details the punishments applied in the period covered from June 2010 to August 2013. Our findings indicate that daily punishments are characterized by cynicism and violence. They are polyvalent in their functions, to the extent that beyond being a form of direct government, they also contribute to the functioning of the prison control outsourcing, to the functioning of an informal market, and to a concealment of torture practices. On the other hand, results also allow us to observe practices of resistance of the punished women and, consequently, corroborate that power relationships need a daily exercise to ensure their reproduction.
