In the EU, after the end of the milk quota system in April 2015, large bovine milk-producing states flooded the market with large quantities of milk, which would lead to the end of many milk cattle companies, especially those of smaller size, in Spain during the period 2015-18. Therefore, to determine whether, after the elimination of the milk quota system, Spanish milk cattle companies should have changed their business model to meat production, this paper analyzes the profitability and solvency of the milk versus meat sector. For this purpose, two samples were taken, one consisting of 365 milk firms and the other of 626 meat firms. From these, a better economic and financial situation is detected in the meat sector, since its profitability has experienced better performance and takes higher values than those of the milk sector. In terms of their level of financial risk, it is observed that in both sectors Altman's Z' forecasts an intermediate insolvency risk, although the meat sector shows a better performance, since it obtains similar values at the beginning of the period, it has been evolving more favorably.
