ARTEAGA MARTINEZ, Alejandro. The garden, dramatic space in Juan José de Arriola’s No hay mayor mal que los celos (There is no greater danger than jealousy). Connotas. Rev. crit. teór. lit. [online]. 2023, n.26, pp.233-263.  Epub 26-Jun-2023. ISSN 2448-6019.  https://doi.org/10.36798/critlit.v0i26.462.

The Mexican Jesuit, Juan José de Arriola (1698-1768), left in his manuscript No hay mayor mal que los celos, his only known comedy to date. This work belongs to the “capa y espada” genre, and its plot develops the common elements of this Golden Age theatrical model: jealousy, eavesdropping, misunderstandings and duels serve to create an entanglement whose outcome will be the marriage of the protagonists. In addition to its structure, the playwright makes a singular nod to Calderón de la Barca. In No hay mayor mal que los celos theatrical configuration, the dramatic space complexity stands out from other structural elements of this work, because the action takes place in a garden. The exterior space appears densely connoted, as opposed to the interior spaces. Using some elements of theatrical semiotics, this paper analyzes the garden and some of its particularities, as well as some scenic solutions possibly given by Arriola in relation to the theatrical space revealed behind the didascalic system of his work: the “tablado”.
