Resumen
ISLAS FLORES, Mario César. The construction of a textual city: Montevideo in Irrupciones by Mario Levrero. Connotas. Rev. crit. teór. lit. [online]. 2023, n.26, pp.212-232. Epub 26-Jun-2023. ISSN 2448-6019. https://doi.org/10.36798/critlit.v0i26.441.
Between February 16, 1996 and June 5, 1998, and later on during the first half of 2000, Mario Levrero wrote 126 articles for the Montevideo magazine Posdata, which would later be compiled -at first by himself under the auspices of the Cauce publishing house- under the title Irrupciones. Unlike his novels and short stories, the Uruguayan author’s essayistic prose has not received the critical attention it deserves by virtue of its relevance within his own writing corpus and also in the field of Hispanic American literature. In Irrupciones, the category of the city is of cardinal importance. For this reason, I recover Peter Fritzsche’s theoretical approaches with the intention of reconstructing the process through which Levrero built a “textual city” based on the Uruguayan capital at the end of the twentieth century, but also on the city that only survived in his memory. This double source of nourishment will shape the ambivalent vision of a city that was experiencing the turn of the century and the millennium.
