The work of Juan Rulfo is one of the greatest and most powerful in the panorama of Mexican literature. He stands out not only for addressing essential social and cultural aspects of the Mexican reality in his narrative, but also for capturing issues of universal order from philosophical, metaphysical and ontological perspectives. Evil is thus a constant theme in the work of Juan Rulfo. This paper studies the depiction of evil through the analysis of the images and poetic symbols in the story “El hombre” which, due to its paradigmatic qualities within the framework of Rulfo’s narrative, allows to cast the configuration of a symbolic of evil through a complex system of metaphors in the poetics of Juan Rulfo. Fundamental to this, as a theoretical basis, are the studies by Paul Ricoeur “The Symbolism of Evil”, collected in Finitude and Guilt, and “The Symbolism of evil interpreted” included in The Conflict of Interpretations.
