The article aims to map the research groups registered in the Directoryof the Research Groups of Brazil that have the word fronteira in their title, identifying in which areas of knowledge the surveys are linked. This is a descriptive documentary study, with data collection performed in the first quarter of 2018 by means of a query parameterized with the term fronteira in Directory of the Research Groups of Brazil, on the electronic page of the National Council for Scientific Development and Technological - CNPQ. The data were organized in a spreadsheet and then was realized the descriptive analysis. There are 119 groups that fall within this criterion, the large majority was constituted after the year 2000, with gradual annual growth, which shows the different frontiers as an increasingly current field of research. The 119 groups are linked to eight knowledge areas, predominating the number of groups in the human sciences areas, with 70 groups, of social and applied sciences with 18, and linguistics, arts and letters with 15. We indicated as a challenge for the groups broadening the horizons of research with reference to the deepening of the collaboration of foreign researchers, the continuity of the establishment of partnerships inter-institutional and international networks and the creation of research networks between groups. We also do the provocation to instigate the construction of interdisciplinary research, which have shown incipient in this survey, surveys that take political borders, social, cultural and symbolic in their different and complex aspects of analysis, which, in many times, demands the interdisciplinarity.
