The relationship between participation and political communication is a complex issue, certainly tackled with different theoretical perspectives and research approaches, although the findings have been insufficiently confronted, which is more accentuated in the current context of a public sphere expanded as a result, among others factors, of the technological convergence of the communications, the accelerated social penetration of platforms and technological devices and the diversification of social uses of the contents exchanged in them.

The objective of this article is to argue the pertinence of an interdisciplinary approach to elucidate such a relationship, focusing on the ways in which communicative practices can alter the political practices of citizens. First the study problem is posed, then trends in the research are identified and the following section the current orientations exemplified by case studies and at the end there are reflections on this exploration.
