In this article I explore the semā’ of the Mevlevi sufi dervishes and the yúmari- tutuguri of the Rarámuri according to the relations between the body, the soul, dance, ritual performance and poetic text from a literary perspective. In order to do so, I rely on Julia Kristeva’s concepts of the Semiotic and the Symbolic. The former refers to the signifying process in which no division of the sign and the subject has taken place yet, while the latter implies a process in which the subject already inserts him/herself in language and in society. According to my hypothesis, the ritual performance of both Sufis and Rarámuri, aims to return to the Semiotic, while at the same time, such experience is translated into a socially coded language, such as poetry and dance, in the Symbolic. In both performances, the dialogue between these processes derives in the circular nature of each dance, which symbolizes, according to their socio-cultural and religious nature, the rebirth of man and the reenactment of the deal between man and deity that puts the universe in motion.
