Abstract

ALVEAR GALINDO, María Guadalupe. Violence and public health: reflections regarding the risk approach. Inter disciplina [online]. 2018, vol.6, n.15, pp.125-135.  Epub Feb 19, 2021. ISSN 2448-5705.  https://doi.org/10.22201/ceiich.24485705e.2018.15.63842.

The results obtained through the Public Health Approach (PHA) for the study of violence are limited and, in practice, lead to the stigmatization and criminalization of poverty. This text reflects on this interpretive framework to explore its scope and limits. From the PHA, violence is understood as a simple violent act but not as a social phenomenon. Its categorization reduces the study to its measurement and association with risk factors, from who is the recipient of the violent act or what is the type of act exercised, making impossible to contextualize it. As a result, the interpretation of violence loses sight of the social processes of which it is a part.

Keywords : violence; public health viewpoint; ecological model; type of violence.
