We are currently facing a difficult outlook due to the marked antibiotic resistance to existing antimicrobial agents. Microbial infections represent an important clinical threat, which is why it is necessary to look for alternatives for new agents, carrying out tests for microbial sensitivity and biocompatibility. The aim of this review is to do a systematic search about the microbial activity and the biocompatibility of silver sulfide nanostructured for biomaterial applications. The search was carried out in October 2020 in the ScienceDirect, Web of science y PubMed databases by using the keywords, biocompatibility, cell viability, antimicrobial activity or antifungal effect. The PRISMA recommendations for systematic reviews were used. From thirteen full-text articles included about in vitro or in vivo studies shown that silver sulfide nanostructures inhibited Gram (+) and Gram (-) microorganisms such as, S. aureus and E. coli, respectively, regardless of size of nanoparticles. Quantum dots smaller than 5 nm of silver sulfide presented over 65% cell viability with fibroblasts or human cells. It is concluded that the antimicrobial activity and cell viability exhibited by the silver sulfide nanostructures do not show a dependence with size and concentration, but it could be used in biomaterials.
