Public opinion studies in Latin America show that in the last decade insecurity has become the main public concern. Among the arguments analyzed, we can see that some governments, international organizations and societies blame the media of increasing people’s fear by continuously reporting on crime. However, evidence on its impact is unclear, and the different types of reception that emerge from the same news report are conditioned by a number of variables. This article discusses the main arguments over the reception of crime reports, based on Anglo-Saxon and Latin American studies. Thus, we propose to contribute to the discussion on the role of the media and its connection to public opinion on this sensitive subject.
