PEREZ MORALES, Vania; VELEZ SALAS, Doria del Mar; RIVAS RODRIGUEZ, Francisco Javier  y  VELEZ SALAS, Manuel. Evolution of Extortion in Mexico : a Regional Statistical Analysis (2012-2013). Rev. mex. opinión pública [online]. 2015, n.18, pp.113-135. ISSN 2448-4911.  https://doi.org/10.1016/s1870-7300(15)71363-3.

Extortion represents a serious affection to people´s wealth, tarnish freedom and reflects a precarious rule of law, as long as authorities don´t guarantee inhabitants safety and wealth at the expense of the nation economic and social development. This paper aims to make a proper diagnosis about the status of of extortion in México through a statistics analysis of the Secretariado Ejecutivo del Sistema Nacionalde Seguridad Pública (SESNP) available data.

According to public and official information, in 2013, 8 042 legal complaints for extortion were made, wich represents an increase of 10.59%, compared with the legal complaints made in 2012, wich is equivalent to 22 legal complaints per day, or one per hour. However, those 8 042 legal complaints are only a small sample of what is happening around this phenomenon, because most of the legal complaints and completed extortions are uncounted.

This study concludes that extortion rates in Estado de Mexico, Distrito Federal, Guanajuato and Jalisco are above the national average, wich suggests not only concentration and crime permanence, but their urgent treatment in crime combat.
