Literature is a cultural expression that internally engenders the ideology of a certain era. Through it, we can reconsider topics that allude to the human condition and the ways of being in the world. In this article, based on the gender category and the semiotic analysis of speech, we analyze the story “Cooking lesson” of the author Rosario Castellanos. Our purpose is to question how the performative process operates in the constitution of the self in the representation of a transgressive female character in the mid-twentieth century. Some of the questions that guide our analysis are: What does the construction of an abject female subject mean in that era? What esthetic resources does the author use to configure the character?
