FIGUEIREDO, Nicole  e  PAULA, Nilson Maciel de. Challenges in public food safety policies in México: A study of the school breakfast program. Estud. soc. Rev. aliment. contemp. desarro. reg. [online]. 2021, vol.31, n.57, e211110.  Epub 21-Mar-2022. ISSN 2395-9169.  https://doi.org/10.24836/es.v31i57.1110.

Objective:

To understand the contribution of the Desayunos Escolares Program (PDE), and its limits as a public food policy to guarantee sovereignty and Food and Nutrition Security, in Mexico City, Loma Bonita and El Palmito.

Methodology:

Firstly, a review was made on the literature related to the subjects of Food Sovereignty, Food and Nutrition Security, theory of food regimes, among other approaches. Secondly, the analysis is based on semi-structured interviews with relevant actors, namely directors of schools, family famers and supplying firms, in order to understand PDE in Mexico.

Results:

The field research confirmed the importance in the three cases analyzed, of a diet linked to the region's eating habits and the purchase of products from local producers as an alternative to contain the effects of the prevailing neoliberal diet in food consumption of students and their families.

Limitations:

Despite the relevance of these results it is important do stress the geographic and social limits of this investigation, which, as we suggest, should be replicated in other urban spaces and rural communities. The results achieved could then reach stronger validation.

Conclusions:

As part of the conclusions, it must be highlighted crucial elements of PDE in promoting Food and Nutrition Security and Food Sovereignty in Mexico, and that this program can be improved through a greater integration with other public policies.
