ENCISO-GAYTAN, Gabriela; ALMEIDA-PERALES, Cristina; RUIZ DE CHAVEZ-RAMIREZ, Dellanira  y  GARCIA-ZAMORA, Pascual Gerardo. Obesogenic dynamics of schoolchildren in the Zacatecas-Guadalupe metropolitan area. Estud. soc. Rev. aliment. contemp. desarro. reg. [online]. 2020, vol.30, n.56, e20986.  Epub 06-Dic-2021. ISSN 2395-9169.  https://doi.org/10.24836/es.v30i56.986.

Objective:

To compare the characteristics of the obesogenic dynamics of schoolchildren in the Zacatecas-Guadalupe metropolitan area according to their sociodemographic condition: high social priority area and non-high social priority area.

Methodology:

Cross-sectional, comparative, cuantitative, descriptive and socio-spatial study. Under a quota sampling, 10 public primary schools by area were selected to analyze indicators of the obesogenic environment around them. The number of commercial and service establishments that promote the consumption of hypercaloric foods was considered, as well as the physical advertising near the schools. SPSS software was used for data processing. Likewise, with the Digital Map program, the socio-spatial characterization of the obesogenic environment was developed, thus obtaining a unique and innovative study in its approach.

Results:

More obesogenic options were found in schools of high social priority compared to those with higher social development. The characteristics of advertising outside of schools did not comply with the recommendations of the Pan American Health Organization.

Limitations:

The results of this study are specific to the metropolitan area in question.

Conclusions:

A dominant obesogenic environment close to schools was evidenced, this condition deepened in those located in areas of high social priority. In Mexico, the public policy for the control and prevention of obesity does not protect children from obesogenic environments around schools, it is essential to regulate the advertising and availability of harmful food in favor of school health.
