Marx’s conception where the economic base determines the superstructure was interpreted unilaterally and schematically by many of his followers, especially in Soviet Marxism. For anthropology it seems to be a tight corset. This essay aims to address the influence of this vulgar Marxist notion in the development of anthropology; primarily, from the theoretical point of view and, secondly, in the specific case of Cuba. It will address the consequences of this reductionist approach in the development of social sciences, particularly, the anthropological discipline from a brief reconstruction of its history on the island.
