In this essay, I propose to read “Shajarit”, the first section Migraciones, by Gloria Gervitz (Mexico 1943-), as the fruit of the encounter between memory and desire. I depart from the observation that the women who inhabit the poem hand down to the voice that sings a world made of religion, diaspora, eroticism, trauma; a world distilled through the longings of the lyric self. At the crossroads of word and experience, the forces of recollection and desire meet and struggle. It is my contention that the Mexican poet proposes an anthropology of the subjective in its historical, cultural, and social evolution. Throughout my text, I elaborate a reflection on intimacy, based on the ideas of Winnicott, Lacan, Yousef. I finally argue that, in “Shajarit,” intimacy is the space where the struggle between word and experience, the self and the other, history and passion, takes place.
