Phenology 1 is an indicator of ecosystem functioning. It can be studied from the seasonal evolution of the Leaf Area Index (LAI), in the form of time series. The objective of the work was to characterize the phenology of the different covers of the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, starting from its GEOV1 series (2000 - 2015), which provides a LAI value for each km2, every 10 days. For each type of cover, the average LAI of all pixels on each date is obtained, which constitutes its climatology and represents the baseline of the ecosystem’s behavior. For each pixel, the annual phenological variables are calculated (start, end and duration of the growing season, maximum and minimum LAI) and for each cover these variables are analyzed in relation to climate and relief. Sacred fir forests show low seasonality, the lowest and most illuminated áreas finish after the growing season and the annual accumulated LAI is lower. In pine forest, broadleaved trees explain the spatial variation of phenological variables; the highest areas start the growing season earlier, but the most illuminated areas have longer seasons. In crops and shrubs, the higher the elevation, the earlier the growing season. This methodology allows the systematic monitoring of natural covers and their comparative analysis, in the context of climate change.
