Abstract

HERNANDEZ-SANDOVAL, Pedro et al. Thermoregulation, thermotolerance and metabolic rate of Macrobrachium tenellum adults. Ecosistemas y recur. agropecuarios [online]. 2018, vol.5, n.14, pp.353-363. ISSN 2007-901X.  https://doi.org/10.19136/era.a5nl4.1426.

The objective was to determine the thermoregulation, thermotolerance (TC max and TC min ) and oxygen consumption of Macrobrachium tenellum adults (21.3 g ± 1.23 g), for which five acclimation temperatures were assessed for 30 d. The thermal preference was 26.5 oC; the acclimation temperature had no significant effect on thermal preferences. The TC min and TC max for each acclimation temperature was 10.2 °C, 11.01 °C, 11.9 °C, 12.9 °C and 13.7 °C, and 36.3 °C, 37.5 °C, 39.25 °C, 40.2 °C and 41.5 °C, with significant differences between them, while the thermal polygon was 331 oC2, characteristic of eurythermic species. The oxygen consumption rate increased from 91.4 to 130.7 mg O2 kg-1 h-1 with acclimation temperature, which explains the preference for low temperatures, its distribution pattern and its thermal optimum in adult stage.

Keywords : Thermal polygon; aquaculture; critical temperature; preferendum final.
