There have been several strategies for the conservation of biodiversity in Mexico, one of which is the establishment of Private Conservation Areas (PCAs), which provide environmental services forbiological diversity that protect, such as mammals, which are an important biological group because of the number of ecological processes in which they are involved. The aim of this study was to analyze the diversity of mammals at three sites in the Talhpan PCA, located in the municipality of Papantla, Veracruz, Mexico. The methods used for sampling animal populations included camera traps, direct observation, Sherman traps, Pitfall traps and tracks. A total of 17 species belonging to 15 genera, 12 families and six orders were recorded, with the vegetation of the semi-evergreen tropical forest presenting the greatest richness. It was found that beta diversity was the most important in explaining the total richness due to the high species turnover between sites. The use of camera traps was the method by which the highest number of species was recorded. The species Cryptotis parvus, Potos flavus and Tamandua mexicana, which are in a conservation category in NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010, were recorded. Despite the relatively small size of the Talhpan PNC, Non-volant mammals found there represent 50 % of the number recorded at the regional level, demonstrating the conservation potential of such areas for maintaining the diversity of mammals in northern Veracruz, Mexico.
