Resumen

FOROUGHBAKHCH-POURNAVAB, Rahim; BACOPULOS-MEJIA, Elly  y  BENAVIDES-MENDOZA, Adalberto. Effect of UV-C radiation on the germination and vigour of three plant species. Ecosistemas y recur. agropecuarios [online]. 2015, vol.2, n.5, pp.129-137. ISSN 2007-901X.

The responses of three plant species, Glycine max L., Triticum aestivum L. and Helianthus annuus L., exposed to different doses of UV-C radiation applied in the seed were studied. The objective was to test the hypothesis that it is possible to find a dose of UV-C that positively modifies seed germination and heat stress tolerance. The results of the standard germination test showed that the variables associated with the germination vigor and percentage, the number and biomass of normal seedlings exhibited no response to the UV-C radiation in wheat and sunflower; conversely, soybean showed a negative response to these variables. UV-C radiation decreased the average length of the plumule, while the radicle average length showed no change in soybeans and wheat, and a positive effect in sunflower. After applying stress conditions of high temperature and humidity, a positive effect of UV-C radiation was observed, but only for variables of vigor and germination in sunflower and soybeans, with UV-C doses of 2.88-43.2 kj m-2 and 57.6 kj m-2, respectively. Conversely, the number of normal seedlings, the plumule and radicle biomass and the length, as well as the seedling biomass showed no changes with UV-C radiation.
