A critical theory with an emancipatory aim currently finds a new lease of life in popular cultures that should realistically be better known as ‘everyday’ cultures (detective novels, songs, cinema, TV series, etc.) in the wake of Stanley Cavell’s work. This involves going through a cross-border dialogue of “language games” (Wittgenstein). Three cases are dealt with: a French folk song (Envole-moi), an American TV series (American Crime) and a British-American-Irish film (Disobedience). The resources drawn from these cultural products can help contain the current wave of ultra-conservative identity-making in France, Europe, United States, Brazil… thanks to their affinity with a policy of ‘openness’ as inspired by Emmanuel Levinas.
