BEAUDOIN DUQUETTE, Alexandre. Canadian multiculturalism and Colombian art in Montreal: disarming national stereotypes with Fritta Caro. Cultura representaciones soc [online]. 2019, vol.13, n.26, pp.129-160. ISSN 2007-8110.  https://doi.org/10.28965/2019-26-06.

Canadian multiculturalism inspires Canadian immigration institutions in the shaping of their propaganda campaigns to attract a qualified labour force in order to foster Canada’s competitiveness in a globalized market without compromising the country’s national security. These campaigns typecast the nation as a place where diverse cultures coexist without conflict, and in which Canada is a magnanimous global actor. In this article, the author contrasts this stereotyped image with the testimonies of Helena Martin Franco, a Colombian visual artist who lives in Montreal, and a character that she created called Fritta Caro. This contrast offers various dissonances that have the potential to contribute dismantling the stereotypes of the Canadian immigration institutions’ propaganda.
