VARGAS MORENO, Paola Andrea. Strategies in dispute: higher education and indigenous populations in the construction of the Latin American nation-states. Cultura representaciones soc [online]. 2019, vol.13, n.26, pp.97-128. ISSN 2007-8110. https://doi.org/10.28965/2019-26-05.
This text provides an account of the ways in which indigenous populations in Latin America have been excluded/included in the processes of designing and implementing higher education, a field in permanent dispute from which the hegemonic nation-state project is currently constructed. As a starting point for the discussion, the text takes the relationships between modernity, education and the nation-state in Latin America and explains the contemporary crisis of higher education. Subsequently, the document focuses on analyzing transformations in the ways in which indigenous peoples and communities have participated in the dispute about the national education project, with special attention to higher education. In this framework, it highlights the understanding of homogenizing miscegenation, neoliberal multiculturalism and the construction of interculturality as historical trends and devices for managing ethnic-racial/ethnic-cultural differences; models that have involved the development of educational projects such as “assimilationism”, inclusion and dialogical construction as promising elements for transformation.
