Abstract

PIZZIO, Alex  and  LOPES, José Rogério. Controversies arising from the certification of the Geographical Indication of the golden grass of Jalapão: The Case of the Mumbuca, Mateiros (TO) Community. Cultura representaciones soc [online]. 2018, vol.13, n.25, pp.140-169. ISSN 2007-8110.  https://doi.org/10.28965/2018-25-05.

The article describes the context of production of cultural artifacts from golden grass (capim dourado) in the Jalapão region, Tocantins State, Brazil, focusing on the trajectory of the extractive quilombola community of Mumbuca, located in the municipality of Mateiros, and their nexus with cultural policies. The descriptions of the trajectory of the local association of artisans and their partnerships demonstrate institutional and environmental constraints that have affected their production techniques and enforced current difficulties for the actors. The processes described lead to a discussion on the certification of the Geographical Indication of golden grass and its repercussions.

Keywords : Mumbuca Comunity; golden grass; Geographical Indication Certification; cultural policies.
