GOMEZ GUERRA, Lisandra y PINO REINA, Yanetsy. Cuban cultural journalism: social representations of gender. A case study of the cultural supplement Vitrales. Cultura representaciones soc [online]. 2017, vol.12, n.23, pp.61-87. Epub 01-Sep-2017. ISSN 2007-8110.
What is presented in this text is part of a research that aims to analyze the social representations of gender in Cuban cultural journalism, taking as a case study the cultural supplement Vitrales, Sancti Spíritus, considered one of the best of its kind in the Caribbean nation. The theoretical basis is the articulation of the Theory of Gender and that of Communication. A discourse analysis and in-depth interviews to journalists and the editor were carried out in order to analyze how and why the feminine and masculine traits are assumed in the publication’s materials, and are later legitimated by the different age groups who read them. In conclusion, it is pointed out that in the cultural press the stereotypes associated with traditional gender roles predominate. The discourse reveals diversity in the treatment of women in the cultural sector, but the social representation of prevailing gender is generally consistent with the traditional hegemonic representation; this demonstrates the consideration of male as the norm and female as a subordinate, based on traditional roles and gender stereotypes.
