Cultura representaciones soc [online]. 2009, vol.3, n.6, pp.145-162. ISSN 2007-8110.

In the nineteenth Century, the concept of "race" was part of the elite's discourse in order to justify their domination. Some Mexican peasants (campesinos) had then appropriated some of the dominant discourse's concepts in order to place their own discourse on the political stage. In this Mexican context of ideological struggles peasants had recourse to ethnic (racial) concept to defend their rights to the lands as well as their political traditions for municipal self-government. Thus they endow it with different signification: the Indian race as legitimate owners of the lands. So, Guy Thomson may refer to it as "political bilinguism" when he analyses peasant demands. The study of popular folksongs (corridos) has been fruitful in that it has allowed the exploration of political themes during the Porfiriato (1876-1911). The central hypothesis is that in a difficult context, peasants had to reinterpret the dominant ideology in their dialogue/resistance with the State in order to be able to place their "words" and be listened to.
