Abstract

PEREZ RUIZ, Maya Lorena; ALTBACH, Daniel  and  PEREZ CORONADO, Inés Argueta. Las cambayas en Michoacán: Tradición y globalización. Cultura representaciones soc [online]. 2007, vol.2, n.3, pp.67-105. ISSN 2007-8110.

This paper analyzes the production of hand-woven cotton cloth, called cambaya, made on wooden pedal-looms: a technology first introduced in Mexico by the Spaniards in the XVI Century that today faces the challenge of renovating itself or disappearing. The specific case of Telares Uruapan, in the State of Michoacan, is analyzed to show the paradoxes of maintaining traditions, as well as the impacts of globalization on a local productive process considered artisanal and traditional.

Keywords : cambaya; local knowledge; tradition; traditional technology; globalization; innovation and cultural continuity.
