Abstract

TORRES SOTO, Nissa Yaing; CARRAZCO ESCALANTE, José Crisóforo; ROJAS MENDEZ, Daniel  and  LEYVA LEON, Eduardo. Effects of COVID-19 sanitary measures on aquaculture in the northwestern region of Mexico. Entreciencias: diálogos soc. conoc. [online]. 2021, vol.9, n.23, e2378825.  Epub Feb 21, 2022. ISSN 2007-8064.  https://doi.org/10.22201/enesl.20078064e.2021.23.78825.

Purpose:

To analyze the effect of COVID-19 sanitary measures on Pacific white shrimp aquaculture productivity.

Methodological design:

A total of 102 managers, whose average age was 45.4 years (SD=8.85), were surveyed. 101 aquaculture farms in the State of Sinaloa were taken into consideration for this study. The farms are located in the cities of Ahome, Guasave, Angostura, Navolato, Elota, Cospita, Culiacán, Mazatlán, El Rosario and Escuinapa. A structural equation model was used for the analysis of the results with the objective of testing the effect of the preventive measures of COVID-19 on the productivity of shrimp aquaculture.

Results:

The confirmatory factor analysis proved that COVID-19 preventive measures positively and significantly influence shrimp productivity. By adopting sanitary measures, organizations not only buffer against the negative impact of the pandemic, but can also stimulate effective responses for good productive performance.

Research limitations:

The size of the sample comprised by the organizations studied, limits the scope in generalizing the results on a large scale; however, certain data can be utilized by aquaculture organizations in Sinaloa.

Findings:

Agri-food systems should take advantage of the juncture which the disease -COVID-19- is leaving worldwide since its optimal functioning will contribute not only to the growth of the organizations but also to regional development.

Keywords : COVID-19; sanitary contingency; productivity; aquaculture; Sinaloa.
