Abstract

MENENDEZ FIERROS, Diego Eduardo  and  BECERRA HERNANDEZ, Antonio. Anxiety in young athletes: a comparative study between men and women. Horiz. sanitario [online]. 2020, vol.19, n.1, pp.127-135.  Epub Nov 26, 2020. ISSN 2007-7459.  https://doi.org/10.19136/hs.a19n1.3398.

Objective

To identify in which gender of a group of athletes -women and men-, has a considerable increase or decrease in the degree of anxiety, recognizing the external and internal circumstances that affect sports performance.

Material and methods

This article is a mixed comparative and cross-sectional study, with a sample of the anxiety indices that originate with sports practice between female and male athletes. A probabilistic sampling was carried out at the facilities of the Palacio de los Deportes and the Normal School of Physical Education Pablo García Avalos, taking a sample of 30 people randomly, which met the inclusion criteria, which consist in having an age between 19-24 years; 15 of the female sex and 15 of the male sex, applying Beck’s Anxiety Inventory, which consists of 21 items. Data analysis was performed using Microsoft Excel.

Results

During sports, a tendency was found in the group of women to increase the anxiety indexes. On the other hand, in the group of men, levels dropped and fell significantly.

Conclusions

The importance of sports praxis and the influence of extrinsic and intrinsic factors in emotional variations are rescued, as well as the need to assess anxiety levels in three moments: before, during and after sports.
