ROJAS VALENCIANO, Ligia Patricia. The phenomenon of power in nursing in the academy and the healthcare área from the teacher’s perspective. Horiz. sanitario [online]. 2019, vol.18, n.1, pp.17-26. ISSN 2007-7459.  https://doi.org/10.19136/hs.a18n1.2067.

Object:

Show the results of the analysis dimension entitled “Power in Nursing”which is part of the project Systematization of the teachers’ experiences of the Nursing School in the construction of meanings of nursing from the hermeneutic interpretation, approved by the Vice Rector of Research at the University of Costa Rica with the code 421-B4-361.

Materials and methods:

Five sessions with 15 teachers from the School of Nursing were developed. It is a qualitative study applying the dialectical hermeneutical method. The design used is that posed by Joseph A. Maxwell (1996). From the data, we proceeded to transcribe, reduce the data and carry out the interpretative analysis.

Results:

From the power dimension in nursing, two categories emerged for analysis and interpretation: 1. Power from academia and 2. Power from health care institutions.

Conclusion:

Nursing, as in the past, maintains a disadvantaged position due to the domination and submission to other professionals, diminishing importance to their exercise of power in the health team. Therefore, the image or modeling that the nursing teacher in the clinical field must maintain n front of the students is affected, which in tum influences the training and validating the same positions of submission and domination.
