This article reviews conceptualizations of notions of social capital and networks of social relations to specify how they could contribute to research in the field of stratification and social mobility. We summarize classic versions of social capital and some hypotheses of social network analysis, such as the strength of weak ties and structural holes. We then discuss some of the ways in which research on class and social mobility has addressed the issue of social capital/networks and recognized their importance. Finally, we reflect on the potentialities and challenges of a confluence between analyses of class and social networks.
