Resumen

AVILA SANCHEZ, María de Jesús  y  JAUREGUI DIAZ, José Alfredo. Intersectionality and Ethnic Inequality in the Labor Market of the Metropolitan Monterrey Area. Intersticios sociales [online]. 2021, n.22, pp.207-235.  Epub 03-Nov-2021. ISSN 2007-4964.

In our research we set out to analyze ethnic inequality in wage work among women in the metropolitan area of the city of Monterrey in northern Mexico, and the conditions in which indigenous and non-indigenous women are inserted into the labor market there, using the theoretical-methodological perspective called intersectionality. This approach has proven useful in showing how the social categories of women and ethnic groups act in labor markets and contribute to the reproduction of ethnic inequalities among women, concretized in the occupational segregation of Indigenous women. Results confirm that the labor market creates unequal access by channeling indigenous women into low-wage occupations with less social prestige. This is clearly visible in the large wage gap or disparity, which is estimated at 33 %, which means that indigenous women, on average, earn only 67 % of what women who do not recognize themselves as indigenous receive. Obviously, this limits the economic, social, and political freedoms of the former and fosters a privileged situation for non-indigenous working women.
