This document seeks to draw attention over the conditions of possibility to continue the exercise of inland fisheries on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. A case study is proposed, that of the fishing town Barra de Tupilco (municipality of Paraíso, Tabasco), where since approximately 20 years ago fishermen have noticed a decrease in their catches, and those that, in their opinion, constitute the causes of this phenomenon: climate change, coastal geomorphological dynamism, population increase and overfishing and, in particular, the extraction of hydrocarbons in Gulf waters. Finally, based on this scenario, a reflection is offered in which the market, government and the oil industry are recognized as central elements in defining the future of fishing in Gulf waters. The information presented is part of the ethnographic record, semi-structured interviews and informal conversations with the locals.
