Abstract

GARCIA PEREYRA, Rutilio  and  ZETINA RODRIGUEZ, María del Carmen. Discrimination and criminalization of the prostitute in the binational region of Ciudad Juarez-El Paso, 1900-1930. Intersticios sociales [online]. 2020, n.19, pp.191-234.  Epub Feb 25, 2020. ISSN 2007-4964.

The objective of this text is to show how women involved in prostitution in Ciudad Juárez and El Paso were discriminated against and criminalized in a period when morality was the main regulator of social behavior. The discrimination and criminalization of prostitutes is assumed to have resulted in a social stigma, as posited by Erving Goffman. At the same time, the vision of the binational region adopted by historians is discussed, together with other views that mention other border regions in comparison to Manuel Ceballos Ramírez’ proposal for defining borders. The text is based on the analysis of documents from historical archives, newspaper sources, specialized bibliography, and a review of relevant book chapters and articles. The time frame covers the late 19th century to the decade of 1930.

Keywords : prostitution; prostitution; border; region; stigma; discrimination; criminalization.
