Abstract

ARIAS, Patricia. From migrations to mobilities. Los Altos de Jalisco. Intersticios sociales [online]. 2020, n.19, pp.101-128.  Epub Feb 24, 2020. ISSN 2007-4964.

In recent years, population displacements have occurred that correspond to mobilities rather than migratory processes. This is even true for the case of migration to the U.S., which had been the dominant pattern for decades in several areas of Mexico. Based on information from the region of Los Altos de Jalisco, the article documents how -in just two decades, 1995-2016- new mobilities have emerged that correspond to an apparently irreversible change: the impossibility of migrating to the U.S. Alteños (residents of Los Altos) had to confront the loss of this work option through transitions in the economic, labor and social dynamics of their rural communities of origin. Despite this change, no noticeable increase in internal migration -that is, temporary or definitive departures from the region- has occurred. What is observed is a generalization of mobilities within the region and into neighboring states in which people maintain their homes in their communities of origin, even in small localities. The article thus contributes to updating our knowledge of socio-spatial changes and recent displacements in a region traditionally linked to U.S. migration.

Keywords : Mexican/U.S. migration; internal migration; mobilities; gender relations.
