Resumen

MARTINEZ-VALDES, Valentina; SILVA RIVERA, Evodia  y  GONZALEZ GAUDIANO, Edgar J.. Urban parks: perspectives from studies of public space. Intersticios sociales [online]. 2020, n.19, pp.67-86.  Epub 24-Feb-2020. ISSN 2007-4964.

As public spaces, urban parks in Mexico are not only places where everyday life is lived, but also ideological and political constructs that result from distinct power relations. This article, written from the perspective of critical urban sociology, addresses the tensions and other complexities that derive from the social, cultural and political interactions that occur in parks. As a social product, the urban park opens a debate over issues related to socio-spatial segregation, access to, and management of, public goods, concepts of recreation and nature in the city, as well as processes of urban governance. It is suggested that the production of urban spaces should include an understanding of the type of socio-spatial relations they promote. The article concludes with the recognition of a critical socio-spatial perspective for analyzing public spaces and their sociopolitical and socioeconomic interactions, as exemplified by urban parks. Likewise, this discussion can provide a foundation for collectively planning and reconfiguring the urban territory.
