MEDINA NUNEZ, Ignacio  e  MEDINA VILLEGAS, Adriana. Violences against women in couples’ relationships in Mexico. Intersticios sociales [online]. 2019, n.18, pp.269-302. ISSN 2007-4964.

Violence against women is a serious social problem worldwide. The World Health Organization (WHO) in 2016 estimates that approximately one out of every three women in the world has experienced some kind of physical or sexual violence, with her partner being the aggressor in the vast majority of cases. It is also estimated that 38 % of feminicides that occur in the world are committed by women’s partners. In the specific case of Mexico, 47 % of women aged 15 and over have suffered some kind of violence at the hands of their husbands, partners, ex-husbands, ex-partners, or boyfriends. The fact is that women -due simply to the fact that they are women- suffer violence and violations of their human rights from birth to death. The purpose of this paper, in keeping with the keywords cited below, is to elucidate, first, a theory of gender equality and, second, add a diagnosis of several situations of family violence directed against women in Mexico in general and, more specifically, in the state of Jalisco. This approach leads to a focus on an experimental case called the GAM Program -that is, Mutual Support Groups “Among us women”- that was implemented in Guadalajara, Mexico, from 2015 to 2018.

Palavras-chave : gender; women; family violence.
