This article examines the scientific contributions of Claudio Gay in the Republic of Chile, emphasizing his idea on science and the characteristics and variables of the epistemic framework applied by this scholarly Frenchman. It also highlights the constant logistical, economic and political support that he received, whether in Chile or abroad, from the authorities of the Republic of Chile, before finalizing with an analysis of Gay’s principle contributions to the earth sciences in 19th-century Chile.
