Resumen

CAMACHO RODRIGUEZ, Karla Teresa. Reflections on the importance of the notion of social class in studies of consumption. The relation of young people with e-purchasing in Mexico. Intersticios sociales [online]. 2019, n.17, pp.59-78. ISSN 2007-4964.

Capitalism’s use of technology has triggered social and cultural changes in diverse fields and practices of social life as commerce has expanded into an immaterial virtual space where the forms and meanings of consumption, and of relating to the objects and symbols of consumption, have acquired new significands, though ones still tightly-interlaced with inequalities in people’s access to technology. The paper explores the importance of the notion of social class in research on consumption by analyzing the panorama of e-commerce and practices of online consumption (e-consumption), as well as the participation by Mexican youth in these practices. The goal of the study is to reflect on these phenomena and then outline potentially fruitful areas for sociological research on consumption and its inevitable links with notions of social class.

Palabras llave : social class; consumption; young people; sociology of consumption; commerce; digital consumption.
