From 2009 Manuel Castells conceptualises power as a process that integrates two distinct elements: violence and discourse. In this research we deal with the analysis of this formula, focusing on the problems associated with the differentiation between the two elements, as well as the reductionism involved in the restriction of power formation mechanisms to these variables. The study allows to question the thesis of complementary power sources, as Castells understands it, from discovering the theoretical operations that constitute his differentiation proposal, and from recognizing the manipulation the Spanish sociologist makes of his main theoretical sources, firstly of Michel Foucault and then, to a lesser extent, of Max Weber.
