Abstract

The aim of this research is to identify the functions attributed to the scientific instruments in the processes of construction of knowledge in different theoretical rationalities. Four positions were identified: I) the instrument is a continuation of the senses provided that it extend his sensory capacity; II) it is a continuation of the theory assumed by the subject; III) it is a neutral mediator between the reason and the reals objects to construct scientific knowledge; IV) it is generator of structures and behaviors of the real. One concluded that the instrument fulfills a differential function depending of the filiation epistemological on the theories: accretive of the sensory capacity in theories of filiation Aristotelian, verified in Platonic theories and of producer of the observed in Kantian theories. The instrument plays a paper onto-epistemological in the processes of construction of scientific knowledge, since his creation obeys the cognitive requirements of a theory for to observe what it attributes to the real or for to generate the phenomenon conceived by the theory.
