Abstract

MEZA-PENA, Cecilia et al. Affect Profiles in the Prediction of Depression in Two Groups of Mexican Population. Acta de investigación psicol [online]. 2021, vol.11, n.3, pp.99-114.  Epub Mar 14, 2022. ISSN 2007-4719.  https://doi.org/10.22201/fpsi.20074719e.2021.3.396.

Differences in depressive symptomatology among Mexicans from two important urban centers were contrasted, analyzing the prediction of depression from affective profiles sociodemographic variables. Method. 1036 students participated, 431 from the Center of Mexico and 605 from the Northeast. Depressive symptomatology was evaluated by the CES-D-20 and the affect profiles by the PANAS-20. Results. There is a high prevalence of depressive symptomatology in participants, with significant difference between groups. In the center of Mexico, depression is predicted by the self-destructive affect profile, high affect, as well as unhealthy habits, while in the northeast coincides in the first two predictors, differing because the lesser sense of self-realization is incorporated into the model. Conclusion. Our study suggests differences in the manifestation of depression by geographical area, with a self-destructive affective profile and high affect. It is of interest to highlight that the high affective profile can mask the way of manifesting depression, since they can be considered as extroverts and therefore, underestimate the emotional discomfort that they may be presenting. This aspect is fundamental in the better comprehension of depression in the clinical field.
