ICT have stimulated governments to develop digital strategies such as geoportals, a response to citizens' problems using new technologies like internet. This article proposes to account for the implementation of the geoportal "SIGUE Vallarta", created by the Municipal Economic Development Office. This experience highlights that the adoption of geoportals by local governments allow to innovate on the visualization of geographic information useful to increase competitiveness, improve the public services and minimize costs. However, its use seems to be restricted by the absence of specialized human resources and the digital divide caused by lack of infrastructure and connectivity.
